While you're at it you might as well pick up Daniels' autobiography entitled All in Good Time: Reflections of a Watchmaker although it's horological importance is rather minute. It's a good book that describes many different kinds of escapements and their history of development. George Daniels not only wrote Watchmaking which is considered highly influential among independent watchmakers but also The Art of Breguet which is a guide through an extensive private collection of Bregeut timepieces and is considered the most important work about Breguet - with accompanying high resolution photos and expert analysis.ĭaniels also penned The Practical Watch Escapement as a visual aid when he was trying to sell his co-axial escapement to Swiss manufacturers. In addition to the suggestions already given below: Lots of full-page conceptual illustrations and technical drawings through the margins of almost every page. ![]() ![]() Since George Daniels is teaching you how to make a watch there's only a bit of subject-relevant history and it certainly isn't a glossy photo-book, but Watchmaking is still one of the few technical manuals I also feel would be not out of place on a coffee table. Think a textbook designed to let a very (and I mean very as in thousands and thousands of hours) dedicated pupil build their own movement without the consultation of a master watchmaker or a school program whatsoever. I love the book because the writing and explanation is entirely without pretense. It basically takes the reader from "how does a watch work" to a complete working movement through a very dense and thorough explanation of each step: first making the tools, then understanding the concepts, and then actually machining each and every part of a movement. George Daniels' Watchmaking is a very dense technical manual describing in complete detail every component of a modern watch with the Swiss lever escapement, including some complications. I think "Mastery of Time" linked elsewhere in this thread is exactly what you're looking for.īut, if you're going to make a horology literature collection, I'll plug George Daniels' Watchmaking as a great companion as well.
